"Malibu Perception" Photography Exhibition
The Malibu Arts Commission curated a community art exhibition, Malibu Perception, at the Malibu City Gallery located at Malibu City Hall. The collection was exhibited from April 30 through May 31, 2022. The exhibition featured five local artists: Carla Bowman-Smith, Julie Ellerton, Nicole Fisher, Maureen Halderman, and Dave Teel.
Carla Bowman-Smith
Carla Bowman-Smith, currently the head of the Visual & Performing Arts Department at Malibu High School, has been a photography and graphic design instructor since 1997. She has a BS in Art and Design with Photography Concentration from California Polytechnic University, San Louis Obispo. She has a MA in Education from Pepperdine University.
Julie Ellerton
Julie Ellerton is a native Angeleno, born in Southern CA and raised in both Southern and Northern California. Life in Malibu began as a baby, continued through her teens and became her permanent residence for 15 plus years.
As a child, Julie would sit beside her father, an artist, and would draw or paint right alongside him. Her unique approach began at a young age, coloring outside the lines, creating her own little masterpieces; she was encouraged by both her parents.
Her love of all things where her creative expression could explode, led her to her first camera, a vintage Kodak Instamatic Film, from the 70's. She was captivated, lost in this new world. Her focus was capturing the unexpected, the colorful, the dark - all aspects of life.
She has followed her passion into adulthood, documenting Malibu as she sees it, either through video or her trusted Nikon.
Nicole Fisher
Working in several mediums such as paint, sculpture, mixed media, and photography, Nicole Fisher intends to interpret and share stories through her work. She spent summers on her grandparents farm in Oak Grove, Missouri, and now lives surrounded by California Oaks in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Maureen Haldeman
Maureen Haldeman was born in The Netherlands, araised in Montreal, and now resides in Malibu, California, where she established MJH Photography. After studying art history and fine art photography at UCLA, she began photographing nature - primarily the ocean and its surrounding landscape. She has taught photography at the college level, done freelance work for publications including the LA Times, and has been commissioned to do private projects for the entertainment industry. She has exhibited in numerous galleries nationally and abroad, including Europe and Japan. In the spring of 2022, her work was on view in London and Milan.
Dave Teel
Dave Teel graduated from Western Michigan University in 1986. His goal was to shoot commercially to support his passion for fine art photography. He became so busy with the buisness of photography that picking up a camera during the down time felt like work and his passion for taking images to fulfill his soul had been set aside.
Skip to 2007; His co-artist/wife decide to move their family to the mountains of Malibu, CA. The incredible vistas and open expanse rekindled his passion for shooting images.
